How is Group B shaping up?

There is a momentum building around Spain that is impossible to ignore. Their last defeat came at Euro 2016 when Italy ended their hopes with a 2 – 0 quarter-final win while their last away defeat outside of a tournament came in the Netherlands by the same scoreline in March 2015 (W8, D6).

This is a team which does not know how to lose. They are 19 unbeaten at the moment (W13, D6) and for one which lacks an out-and-out goalscorer in the Kane, Lewandowski, or Ronaldo mould, they do not struggle to score. Seven of their last ten featured over 2,5 goals.

Surprisingly for European champions, Portugal find themselves marked as potential giant-killers. Opening against Spain is tough, but the second match against Morocco is tricky for other reasons. Both teams are hard to break down with the Portuguese not conceding more than one goal since a 2 – 2 draw with Mexico in last year’s Confederations Cup, 12 games ago.

They are almost sneaking under the radar as far as the World Cup is concerned. Unbeaten in nine (W8, D1), they haven’t lost in ninety minutes since Sweden won 3 – 2 in Funchal (W11, D4). And with Cristiano Ronaldo in the side, Fernando Santos has one of football’s great matchwinners at his disposal, even if they did win the final of Euro2016 without him!

Morocco are very much the dark horses of this group. Unbeaten in nine (W7, D2), the Lions of Atlas didn’t concede a goal in their World Cup qualifying group; three goalless draws accompanied three wins.

Defensively, Morocco are extremely impressive. Since a 2 – 0 defeat to Russia in June 2014, only the Netherlands has scored more than once against Morocco; once in 40 matches (!), a run which saw the Lions of Atlas keep 22 clean sheets. In front of goal, they are proving equally impressive; seven of the last ten matches saw them net two or more.

This is Morocco’s first finals since 1998 when they were eliminated in the group stage despite beating Scotland and drawing with Norway. But the match with Portugal gives the north Africans the chance to relive their finest World Cup moment: 11th June 1986, Morocco 3 – 1 Portugal, a win which gave them top spot and pushed England into second place.

Iran are expected to be the group’s whipping boys. Their record in qualifying was impressive, unbeaten in 18 games (W12, D6) and conceding just five goals in those matches. Team Melli have just two defeats in the last 15 (W10, D3). Facing four World Cup finalists in those matches, only Tunisia beat them with draws achieved against Russia and South Korea, while Panama were beaten 2 – 1.

If they are to pull off a shock, beating Morocco is crucial in their opening game.
