How is Group C shaping up?

France arrive in Russia looking to improve upon the disappointing performance in the final of Euro 2016 when they laboured against Portugal. With the array of attacking talents at their disposal, that was a surprise. Avoiding a repeat of that is Didier Deschamps biggest task.

All eyes will be on Paul Pogba. The midfielder briefly flirted with transfer records but was hugely unimpressive for Manchester United this season. If he shines for France, questions are bound to be asked of Jose Mourinho; that’s if Pogba returns to Old Trafford.

But with Griezmann, Mbappe, and Thauvin, they have three strikers in form which puts them in pole position to reach the last sixteen and beyond.

Les Bleus come into the tournament with one defeat in seven (W5, D1) albeit with some disappointing performances in all or part of their games (0 – 0 vs Luxembourg, 2 – 3 vs Colombia). However, Sweden and Spain are the only other two teams to beat them in the past 15 months (W6, D1) which underlines the quality and depth of their squad.

The biggest test comes in the opening game against Denmark in Moscow. Generally cagey affairs, meeting the second favourites at least gives France the time to recover should they lose. Likewise, the Danes. Defeat will place more pressure on them than Deschamps men with Peru their next opponents.

Denmark have one goal in total from their last three games and while that comes with three clean sheets, it’s a problem not helped by Nicklas Bendtner’s recent injury with Rosenborg. He was the squad’s leading scoring despite netting just once since March 2015.

Much of the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Tottenham maestro Christian Eriksen. He grabbed eight in qualifying as the Danes trailed in Poland’s wake. While they are unbeaten in 2017 and 2018 (W7, D5), the quality of their opposition hasn’t been high.

Which offers Peru some hope. La Blanquirroja were bolstered when Paolo Guerrero, their captain and record goalscorer, had his doping ban suspended by a Swiss court. For a player who feared his moment is past, his motivation for performing well intensified.

That is a big factor; Guerrero is a talisman for the squad and one which is unbeaten since losing to Brazil in November 2016 (W10, D4). Peru has won the last five games which all saw 2+ goals and included wins over Croatia and Iceland. Six of the last eight saw them keep clean sheets and no opponent in the last 13 games has scored more than one goal against them.

Australia are something of an unknown quantity. Ange Postecoglou guided the team to the finals but resigned once qualification was assured. The experienced Bert van Marwijk, who took the Netherlands to the 2010 final, replaced him but departs as soon as the Socceroos World Cup is over. Unsettling times for the team.

2017-18 has been a mixed year. Commendable results (4 – 0 vs Czech Republic, 0 – 0 vs Colombia, 2 – 3 vs Germany) mask an inconsistent side. Whether van Marwijk has enough time to do anything constructive remains to be seen but he turned the 4 – 1 thrashing against Norway into a goalless draw with Colombia in four days during March so anything is possible.
