How is Group E shaping up?

Until the sound of the samba rhythms is heard, the World Cup hasn’t begun. Listen hard; Brazil arrive in Group E. Few would argue with their status as favourites. Usually, it’s allocated to the Seleção out of sentimentality but not this time.

After the humiliation of 2014’s 7 – 1 semi-final thrashing at the hands of Germany, Brazil wasted no time in asserting their authority in the South American qualifying group. So dominant were they, that the Seleção were the first nation to qualify for Russia 2018.

Ten points clear of Uruguay in second and suffering one defeat (0 – 2 vs Chile) with 41 goals in 18 matches. Every way their qualifying campaign is viewed, Tite managed Brazil impressively.

Away from the World Cup, it’s been almost a year since Argentina won 1 – 0 in Melbourne in Brazil’s last defeat (W7, D3) and in their five most recent friendlies against fellow finalists, only England held them to a draw as well as preventing them from scoring.

Brazil have seven clean sheets in 10 matches in 2018, including their last four friendlies.

Switzerland are second favourites, even if they did pop through the backdoor to qualify. Barely scraping past Northern Ireland on aggregate, their performances in the two-legged play-off were better than the scorelines reflected.

The Swiss were undone by Portugal’s superior firepower in their group. That’s unlikely to be an issue in the finals themselves, and the Swiss have good form to fall back on. There is a durability about this squad which manifested in Villarreal during the recent 1 – 1 draw with Spain, even if took a David de Gea error to salvage a draw.

2016-17 saw Switzerland win all six of their matches and just one defeat in nine this season (W6, D2). Four clean sheets in five underline how difficult they can be as opponents.

For Costa Rica, it’s hard to shake the sense that this is one four-year cycle too far. Kaylor Navas may be a three-time Champions League winner with his club, but there’s little sign Los Ticos have progressed significantly since their alegría de vivir brightened Brazil 2014.

Three defeats in the last five ring alarm bells about their prospects of reaching the knockout phase, with the 3 – 0 win over Northern Ireland ending a run of six games where they failed to score more than 1.5 goals per game.

2017-18 is a season to forget, by and large, with six wins and three draws in the 13 matches with three of those wins coming in the last eight games (D2, L3).

Completing the group are Serbia, who progressed at the expense of Wales and the Republic of Ireland. Their form, however, is mixed. A good 2 – 0 win over Nigeria was followed by a home defeat to Chile. This season, the Serbs have five wins in nine (D1, L3) in total. On their travels, there is a surprising resilience emerging with four wins in six (D1, L1).

Goals are at a premium. Only one of the four 2018 fixtures saw over 2.5 goals, coming in the 2 – 1 defeat at the hands of Morocco.

Betting Tips for World Cup Group E

It’s a question of who accompanies Brazil into the knockout phase, rather than predicting which two nations will qualify. Neither Serbia or Costa Rica are consistent, something the Swiss have delivered like clockwork over the past two years.
