How is Group G shaping up?
It is a group of two halves, on paper at least. England and Belgium are vying for top spot and second place. Both were comfortable qualifiers from their respective groups; England took 26 points out of 30, Belgium 28.
The difference was in goals scored and the Red Devils quality shone through. While Belgium ‘only’ faced Gibraltar, Cyprus, Bosnia, Estonia, and Greece, they can only beat the opposition placed in front of them. Which they duly did, scoring 43 goals and conceding just six.
England by contrast struggled; only 18 goals, but with just three conceded with two of those in a draw with Scotland. The Three Lions won eight of the ten without losing, winning all at home and they come into the finals in some of the best form. Unbeaten in 2017/18 (W6, D3), a season in which they faced Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Brazil, conceding just once along the way.
Belgium are likewise in good stead; they won seven of their nine, drawing two. Four consecutive clean sheets coming into the finals with seven matches featuring over 2.5 goals.
Both sides have their vulnerabilities; England can be one-dimensional and susceptible to pace at the back. The Belgians sweat constantly on the fitness of Vincent Kompany or worry about the ability of Vertonghen and Alderweireld to conjure a mistake out of nothing.
While England flatter to deceive on a regular basis, particularly at the final stage of tournaments and the Belgians have yet to deliver on their undoubted talent, neither has anything to fear from Panama or Tunisia.
The Eagles of Carthage are unbeaten this season (W4, D4) and claimed two good draws with Portugal and Turkey. However, they have never beaten either England and only once bettered Belgium (2 – 1 in 1992). And in the World Cup, their previous four attempts yielded one win (3 – 1 vs Mexico in 1978) and never any games beyond the group stage.
Panama are enjoying their first World Cup finals but are very much the group’s whipping boys. In their 15 games this season, they have lost six (W6, D3). A 1 – 0 defeat in Copenhagen saw them accused of being over-physical; it was followed by a 6 – 0 thrashing in Switzerland five days later raising questions about their ability to handle the schedule of matches.
