How is Group H shaping up?

There is a fascinating three-way battle for this group with Poland, Colombia, and Senegal all vying for the two qualifying places.

Poland may be the highest-ranking side but any of the trio can beat the other on any given day. Indeed, the Poles face Senegal and Colombia in their opening two games which could make or break them.

With Robert Lewandowski in their number, they take the field knowing they have goals among them. Fifty-two goals in 93 appearances, including 29 in his last 27 international appearances. The concern is that without him, Poland struggles to score.

Defeat to Nigeria and a draw with Uruguay both came without the Bayern Munich goal-machine; Poland scored in neither match. 2017-18 saw them win four and draw one of their eight games.

The defeats were warnings against optimism for the finals: Denmark (0 – 4) and Mexico (0 – 1), as well as the two previously mentioned non-victorious games, point to the issues they face. No goals in any when the opposition began to look useful.

Colombia are creaking a little as well. A superb 3 – 2 win in Paris after France led 2 – 0 is their high-point of 2018. Goalless draws against Egypt and Australia aren’t impressive results. In qualifying, they scraped in with a last-match draw in Peru while Chile were trounced 3 – 0 by Brazil.

Their away form was the concern; no victory against the top six South American teams was a poor record and at home, they failed to defeat Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. They still have the delights of James Rodriguez but goals look in short supply with Muriel, Bacca, Falcao, and Borja not prolific at this level.

Senegal are the surprise package to some extent. They set Japan/Korea 2002 alight with an opening game win over then-defending champions France and went on to reach the last eight. They have the squad to match that this time around. Sadio Mane has produced excellent form at Liverpool with 33 goals in 73 appearances. For Senegal, he has 14 in 49 caps with four in the last ten. At the back, they have Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli providing a depth at the back.

They are unbeaten in eight (W4, D4), not conceding in the past two although whether being held to a goalless draw by Luxembourg is something to be proud of is another matter.

Completing the group are Japan. Samurai Blue are winless in four (D1, L3) and have just two wins in the last nine (D1, L6). Matches against fellow finalists Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Belgium, and South Korea ended in defeat with a -7 goal difference. The only finalists they have beaten are Australia, 2 – 0 in August 2017.

The questions over Japan’s defence remain unanswered and likely to see them finish bottom of this group.
